Jesus Lucas has illustrated LAU ANAIA UMEZURTZAK written by Sagrario Yarnóz and Joxantonio Ormazabal adapted from a traditional a Basque folk tale. The 1998 edition is a bilingual Basque-English edition translated by Diana Draper.
INTRODUCTION to the 1998 edition
The MARI SAILA (previously AXUT SAILA) is a collection of Basque folk tales. These tales, ten in total, have been handed down over the years through the oral tradition and were set down in writing in Joxe Migel Barandiaran's book EL MUNDO EN LA MENTE POPULAR VASCA.
As this is a children's collection, the texts have been revised to make them more suitable for young readers. This was carried out by Sagrario Yarnoz and Joxantonio Ormazabal.
The wonderful illustrations that bring the tales so vividly to life are the work of Jesus Lucas.
We would especially like to thank all those at Ekintza School in Donostia-San Sebastián for their participation in the conception of this project.
