In the early 80's Jesus Lucas worked with Joxantonio Ormazabal in a collection titled Axut Saila adapting traditional Basque folk tales that in 1998 were re-published under the collection Mari Saila. Two stories were left out from this collection ASTOA, ZAKURRA, KATUA... and OTXOA ETA AZERIA but an eleventh new volume was published today with new illustrations by Jesus Lucas: TARTALO.
INTRODUCTION
The MARI SAILA (previously AXUT SAILA) is a collection of Basque folk tales. These tales, ten in total, have been handed down over the years through the oral tradition and were set down in writing in Joxe Migel Barandiaran's book EL MUNDO EN LA MENTE POPULAR VASCA.
As this is a children's collection, the texts have been revised to make them more suitable for young readers. This was carried out by Sagrario Yarnoz and Joxantonio Ormazabal.
The wonderful illustrations that bring the tales so vividly to life are the work of Jesus Lucas.
